Introduced in 2001, the Dot NAME gTLD is the single TLD meant for personal websites only. These domain names can be personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other designations people are popular by. Initially, solely third-level registrations were permitted, so if you wanted to acquire john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already purchased third-level domain names remained functional.
